When should a PIREP be issued?

A PIREP, or Pilot Report, should be issued specifically during conditions such as wind shear or significant weather changes. This is essential because PIREPs provide real-time, firsthand information about weather phenomena that can affect flight safety and operations.

When pilots encounter turbulence, changing wind conditions, or adverse weather conditions like thunderstorms, they are expected to relay this information as it can be crucial for other pilots and air traffic control. Such reports enable the aviation community to be updated on conditions that are not always captured by weather radar or forecasts.

In contrast, issuing a PIREP during stable weather conditions, at the beginning of a flight, or when the weather is clear would not typically provide valuable or necessary information. PIREPs are most critical when conditions are less stable and present potential hazards.
